Nintendo Switch 2 software is available through three primary distribution formats: traditional physical game cards, digital games and game-key cards. Physical game cards contain the game data on the cartridge and can be played after insertion into the system, while digital games are downloaded to the console and may be purchased through Nintendo eShop, the Nintendo Store website or mobile app, or via retailer-sold digital codes.

Digital purchases use system storage or a compatible microSD Express card, sold separately, and are tied to the Nintendo Account used for purchase or redemption. Certain digital games can be lent in person to members of a Nintendo Account family group without requiring a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Game-key cards, introduced with Nintendo Switch 2, are physical cards sold in game cases but do not include the full game data on the card. After insertion, the software downloads to the system or microSD Express card, with an internet connection required for the initial download; the game remains playable only while the game-key card is inserted. Unlike digital games, game-key cards are not tied to a Nintendo Account and can be lent by physically handing the card to another player.
